The Labrador, a plural breed

Nowadays, Several populations of Labradors coexist in the world breed: the Trialers, the Showdog, the Pets and the Dual-Purpose, dogs with an optimal evolution in the championship ring as well as in a field-trial.

Not to mention the fact that a great deal of Labrador Population is used in a great number of activities such as guiding dog, detection dog, help dog for the handicapped (assistance dog), etc. In a country like Denmark, nearly a third of the population of the breed is formed by useful dogs which have evolved into several disciplines (companion dog, guiding dog, etc.)

Clearly, the Labrador has mounted the winners’ podium of the most widely spread breeds in the world together with the German Sheppard and its cousin the Golden Retriever as it is a family dog, easy to live with and educate and not due to its original qualities of “efficient debt collector.”  This data would not have imagined by the pioneers of the breeding, not even for second a hundred years ago, because in the different countries where it has settled, its first steps were in a group relatively elitist which did not desire that their dog would be everybody’s.

The evolution of the breed has eliminated that astracism. Just in England, the Labrador was first in the ranking by exceeding the number of 35,000 births in 1998. The same happened in EEUU with almost 5 times more births registered by the Kennel Club every year and where its popularity continues to grow.

This strong popularity is spread to almost very breed-lover nation, except for countries like Japan where small dogs have a very particular status. The small dogs are privileged by the type of life in that country.
